The New Retirement Landscape
As baby boomers, we’ve been around long enough to know that nothing ever stays the same. Most of us can pinpoint a time in our lives where either we made a personal shift or the world around us suddenly changed.
In many ways, we are all experiencing a massive shift into a new way of doing life post Covid-19, especially when it comes to how we look at our retirement.
Despite the discomfort, our ability to stretch beyond our comfort zones confirms our resilience and ability to adapt to an ever-changing environment.
With this in mind, retirement can still provide a plethora of once-in-a-lifetime opportunities for those willing to look for them, so let’s dive in.
Reinventing Retirement
It’s time to make a shift in how we see our retirement moving forward. Here’s a list of areas to begin focusing on and making adjustments where necessary.
Rewiring - Actively pursuing a new career, passion, or field of endeavour. Or, taking something that you already love to do and transforming it into a lifelong opportunity for enrichment.
Time – Time is often elusive during our working years. Retirement allows many to live according to our natural rhythm instead of an alarm clock or transit schedule.
Freedom – We have the freedom to choose. Take this time to consider all of your options. Embrace your new freedom and the new perspective that it can bring.
Financial – If you have amassed the wealth you need to carry you through, you have options and the flexibility to choose between them without expense being a heavy burden.
Grandparenting – Once sandwiched between work and parenting, you can now devote time and energy on your terms to seeing your grandchildren develop and grow.
Mentorship – Adapting is a skill that often comes with age and experience. Many of the younger generations will appreciate your life wisdom. Use retirement as an opportunity to mentor others. The by-product of this could be the chance to become the “mentee” when you receive the gifts that they give in return.
Remember that life changes are inevitable, and it’s how we embrace those changes that impact the quality of our lives most. Retirement affords us a unique opportunity to rewire and start anew.
